Read Susan’s Story of Facial Rejuvenation

Let me tell you my story. I’m a woman in my 50s, and for most of my life I would have given myself an average to high-average grade in the looks department. In other words, I was content with the status quo and didn’t spend too much time fussing about beauty or taking care of my skin.

Then I hit 50. When I looked in the mirror, I saw someone I didn’t recognize, someone who looked kind of sad and grouchy. Careworn. And, let’s be honest, puffy. (My own inheritance is a wonky thyroid. Everyone’s personal health issues leave an imprint on their faces.) And don’t even talk to me about that neck! (see for yourself in the “before” picture)

I felt like the lower half of my face was migrating south for the winter. Or like I was watching one of those slow-motion lava flows in Hawaii, only the lava was my face, and the cliff it was heading over was my jawbone. All of a sudden, I was VERY interested in beauty and aging. I threw myself into the specialty of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture and never looked back. After much study and the getting and giving myself of about 15 treatments, I saw in the mirror what you see in the “after” picture!

Now people tell me I look GREAT. They tell me I look HAPPIER. Someone recently told me, “Susan, you are always just GLOWING!” Here’s what they don’t say: “(Yikes!) Did you get work done?” What I see and they see is just my best self the way I feel I should look at this stage in my life. I am THRILLED. So, what does this mean for you, dear reader? It means that at this point in my long acupuncture career I want you to be happy about your face, too. That’s why I offer facial rejuvenation acupuncture as an important revitalizing service at Guiding Spirit Acupuncture!

Frequently Asked Questions about Facial Rejuvenation

Who is facial rejuvenation acupuncture best for?

Facial rejuvenation is equally effective for women and men and can be performed on adults of any age. For younger adults, facial rejuvenation can slow the early signs of skin aging. For older adults, it can help your skin look brighter, smoother, younger, less puffy, and more lifted and evenly toned.

There are some people who should not have facial rejuvenation. For example, it’s not appropriate for somebody whose skin has a compromised ability to heal, or for someone with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Either before or at your first visit, we will review all of these things to be sure that facial rejuvenation is appropriate for you.

Can I do Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture concurrently with other medical facial procedures?

If your procedures are those, such as surgery or dermabrasion, that require healing, wait until you’ve been cleared for acupuncture by your provider. I’d be happy to speak to them to clarify everything that I do to make sure we know when it’s appropriate for you to get facial acupuncture. Once you are cleared, this natural therapy is excellent for promoting healing.

If instead your procedures are injections that are supposed to stay in place, like Botox or fillers, wait until you’re just about ready to get your new round. The reason for this is that facial rejuvenation acupuncture is actually healing and promotes circulation and so it will speed the reabsorption of any injected materials.

How Does Facial Rejuvenation Work?

The facial rejuvenation therapy you receive at Guiding Spirit Acupuncture includes 4 parts: acupuncture, Celluma light therapy, microcurrent therapy, and gentle facial massage with cupping and Gua Sha massage. Each of these targets specific muscular, lymphatic, circulation, and cellular mechanisms to reverse the visible signs of aging.

The facial acupuncture treatment is extremely detailed and specific. We insert fine needles into motor points in the facial muscles of expression. Tense muscles of expression can worsen wrinkles, whereas loose muscles can cause the skin to sag. Acupuncture has a balancing effect—relaxing tight muscles and strengthening and lifting loose muscles. The acupuncture also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are the main proteins needed to regenerate youthful skin. We may also insert tiny intradermal needles directly into wrinkles to stimulate the skin to fill them in.

Once the tiny acupuncture needles are in place, we apply Celluma light therapy, which has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and cause an improvement in skin texture, quality, and smoothness. Celluma light therapy uses wavelengths of light that are scientifically proven to stimulate fibroblasts to increase collagen and elastin production. The Celluma unit arches over the face, clear of the needles, enhancing the benefits of the facial acupuncture treatment.

The next step of Guiding Spirit’s facial rejuvenation therapy is to remove the needles and apply a moisturizing facial mask. This mask is clipped to an acupuncture microcurrent machine which delivers healing electrons in a series of four, five-minute stages (a total of twenty minutes.)  The microcurrent stimulates cellular energy production and cellular repair, while re-educating the facial muscles and encouraging lymphatic drainage.

The final stage after the mask is removed is a special Chinese medicine facial massage using gentle cupping and Gua Sha techniques. In addition to feeling wonderful, this massage will further improve the circulation on your face, flooding the area with oxygen and nutrients, and will encourage the removal of toxins via improved lymphatic drainage.

This particular combination of acupuncture, Celluma light therapy, microcurrent therapy, and facial massage is unique to Guiding Spirit Acupuncture. The comprehensive therapy allows us to deliver superior results when compared with acupuncture alone.

What is a Treatment Session Like?

When you come in for your first facial rejuvenation session, we will do a health intake and thoroughly discuss your concerns with your skin. You’ll lie down on a comfortable massage table, and Guiding Spirit’s licensed acupuncturist, Susan, will meticulously insert fine needles into specific points of the face. For most people, the acupuncture treatment is not painful and is, in fact, surprisingly relaxing.

Once the needles are placed, Susan will apply Celluma light therapy. The Celluma unit will arch over your face and deliver powerful healing light energy while you relax with the needles for 30 minutes.

Then Susan will remove the Celluma light and the needles and apply a microcurrent mask. You may feel a very slight tingling sensation while the micorcurrent does its work. You will rest with the mask in place for twenty minutes.

Finally, the mask will come off and Susan will finish your treatment with a brief, light, soothing session of facial cupping and Gua Sha (massage with a special jade tool.)

The entire session lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. You’ll leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and ready to go about your day.

Follow-up sessions will be somewhat shorter, as there won’t be a need for a thorough intake.

What Can I Expect Over Time?

Most patients come in once a week for 12 weeks. While many patients see positive changes after one or a few sessions, after completing 12 sessions, you will likely experience noticeable, stable improvements in your skin. Many patients choose to transition to treatments once a month or every other month after that. Other patients just pop in for an “acupuncture facial” when they want a tune-up after a stressful period in life or in preparation for a big event.

Patients often tell us that they notice a decrease in fine lines and sagging skin. They say that people comment that they “look great,” or are “just glowing!”
